Tektronix, Inc. , a video industry leader with a deep heritage of innovative solutions, today announced that NBC used Tektronix test and monitoring equipment to evaluate compression technology for potential use in its satellite distribution systems. The Tektronix equipment was used within NBC's in-house laboratory and performed key roles in comparing the product offerings.
NBC used two Tektronix solutions for their trials: the innovative PQA200 Picture Quality Analysis System and the powerful MTS215 Multi-standard MPEG Test System. The MTS215 was used to check the integrity of DVB MPEG-2 datastreams. The PQA200 was used to analyze the video quality of the various systems being checked.
"NBC continues to be at the forefront of the transition to digital technology. However, video compression protocol, along with its potential impact on picture quality, poses a difficult measurement challenge. The Tektronix test and measurement equipment was instrumental in our current digital technology evaluation process," said Bill Moerck, technical development engineer, NBC.
Tektronix enables its customers to design, build, deploy, and manage next- generation global communications networks and Internet technologies, and test the deployment of video with them. Tools such as the PQA200 and the MTS215 enable the quality control and management of video content as it is created, manipulated, and transmitted through these distribution networks.
"We view NBC's use of our equipment for such a crucial evaluation as a testament to our products' reliability and quality. Tektronix is committed to helping companies manage and profit from the analog-to-digital transition. We're honored that NBC used our solutions for their test and monitoring needs," said Bob Agnes, vice president, Video Business Unit, Tektronix.

The PQA200 analyzes picture quality with repeatable, objective measurements that directly replicate subjective human visual assessments. These measurements provide invaluable information for engineers working to optimize video compression without compromising picture quality. The MTS215 enables the user to test MPEG, DVB, and ATSC parameters from established specifications. Based on an industry-standard computing platform that provides flexible and expandable test capabilities, the MTS215 provides three primary capabilities: real-time analysis, deferred-time analysis, and custom transport stream creation and generation.
