BEAVERTON, Ore., November 9, 2009 – Tektronix, Inc., a leading worldwide provider of test, measurement and monitoring instrumentation, announced today that it played a crucial role in helping ASMedia Technology Corp. bring the new ASM1051 SuperSpeed USB 3.0 to Serial ATA single chip bridge to market quickly and take advantage of a narrow market window.
With the computer industry ramping up to deliver products based on the new USB 3.0 standard – up to 10 times faster than USB 2.0 – time-to-market is critical for chip manufacturers such as ASMedia if they hope to have their silicon incorporated into initial product offerings. One of the hottest areas of demand for USB 3.0 is likely to be mass media storage devices that will benefit from faster transfer rates for backup or data sharing. ASMedia’s single-chip USB 3.0 to SATA bridge(1051 series) seemed well positioned – if it could be brought to market swiftly and pass compliance testing.
To optimize the characterization, debug and compliance testing process, ASMedia worked closely with the Tektronix Test & Measurement Center of Excellence in Taipei, Taiwan from the very beginning, enabling them to have access to the Tektronix USB 3.0 test solution and expert consultation on testing this emerging standard. Instead of going to market or plugfests with open issues, ASMedia was able to demonstrate fully compliant designs at critical industry events such as the recent Intel Developers Forum (IDF) held in San Francisco.

Industry Leading USB3.0 Test Capabilities
Tektronix offers a complete, industry leading solution for all aspects of USB 3.0 physical layer testing (www.tektronix.com/usb). The solution uses Tektronix DSA70000B series real-time oscilloscopes for transmitter testing and Tektronix DSA8200 series sampling oscilloscopes for interconnect and cable testing. Compliance testing and characterization automation software on the DSA70000 Series oscilloscopes minimizes the amount of time required to get results while DPOJET jitter and timing analysis software enables in-depth debugging.
The Tektronix USB3.0 solution provides rapid set-up and superior flexibility through the use of the AWG7122B signal generator with direct synthesis. The AWG allows customers to use the same test equipment for all aspects of USB3.0 testing. Instrument setup and configuration is simple with the AWG since it can generate all the signal impairments required for compliance, characterization and debug, or “replay” captured waveforms. In contrast, competitive offerings require that multiple instruments be synchronized together to have a working system, significantly increasing set up time and complexity.
As the data rates of high-speed serial buses increase, test requirements are becoming more stringent and now mandate receiver testing. In order to obtain certification and authorization to apply the USB 3.0 logo on products, all USB 3.0 compliance tests (Transmitter, Cable/Connector and Receiver) must be passed.
